Description

Marayoor Ashram is the 9th among the pioneer houses of the Vincentian Congregation. It was founded in 1967 by the then Superior General Very Rev. Fr. Jacob Kallarackal, Rev. Fr. James Paliyakunnel became its first Superior. It belongs to the juridical boundary of the Diocese of Idukki. The Ashram holds St. Mary as its Patron. It was through Bro. Thomas S.H. that Vincentian Congregation happened to do Mission work among the poor of the high ranges that belonged to the Kothamangalam Diocese. He was a zealous person of the Brothers of Sacred Heart that was doing Service in those days in Kanthalloor, Keezhanthoor, Perumala and Marayoor. He gave not only the initial impetus but also the needful land as well to begin the Ashram. Later on the Ashram bought additional land.

Ever since 1967, Rev. Frs. Thomas Kuzhippala, Joseph Koottiyani, Varghses Chathapparambil, Thomas Thyil, Paul Kidangan, Mathew Thekkepera, Antony Thekkinieth, Sebastian Mappilaparambil, eorge Vazhapplamkudy, Joseph Kuruppanparambil, Mathew Paliyakunnel, Thomas Palakkattu, Romulus Nedumchalil, John Rathappilly (RIP) Sebastian Karikulam, Jose Mechery, George Panthackal, Francis Pullattu, John Punnolil, Jojo Assariparambil, Jose Chettoor, Emmanuel Paliyakunnel, Augustine Naduvilepurayidathil, Thomas Ambattukuzhy, Abraham Orathel, and Bros. Varghese Vattakunnel (RIP), Joseph Thuruthippilly (RIP) and Poulose Kunnappally (RIP), Jacob Athickal have rendered their Service in the Ashram. At present Rev. Fr. Francis Pullattu is the House Superior and Rev. Fr. Chungakarottu Joseph is the Director of De Paul Balabhavan.

Though in the course of its long history various institutions like the Sahayagiri Hospital, De Paul College and Aiswarya Social Centre were run temporarily by the House, they all had to be closed subsequently due to unfavorable circumstances. The honorable Bishop had St. Mary's Parish church cessated in May 1998 and got it re-establish in Sahayagiri. It had been functioning as a part of the Ashram ever since 1967.

Since the Parish was transferred and pastoral work stopped, De Paul Balabhavan was founded in 2001 in the building of the former De Paul College. Boys who study in the fifth class and above study here while they go to Marayoor School.

Thereby the House has been able to do some service to the poorest of the poor of the locality. At present there are 22. An application has been sent to Government for permission to accommodate 60 children. The chief agricultural product is sugar cane. The House has 6 acres of sugar cane cultivation besides the 4 acres given on lease.

The climate is fine and scenic beauty captivating. It can serve as a Summer Villa for the members of the Congregation.
